Flotation involves the separation of solid floc from water. This is done by preparing an air-water dispersion (consisting of water and compressed air) in a pressurized vessel. The dispersion is run into the water along with solid floc particles.
When pressure is released, the air forms tiny bubbles. The bubbles are caught by solid particles and solids are floated to the surface of the water. The floating material is collected with a surface scraper and conveyed to the sludge handling unit. The clarified water is then taken for further water treatment.
